For the first time in history, commercial rockets will launch into orbit from Canadian soil. Markham-based NordSpace is developing the Atlantic Spaceport Complex (“ASX”), the country’s first commercial spaceport, in Newfoundland and Labrador.
ASX’s initial C$10 million development phase includes two facilities: Space Launch Complex-01 will house pads for orbital rockets, while Space Launch Complex-02 is designed to support suborbital flights and provide tracking infrastructure. This project is fully sourced and constructed within Canada.
The site’s inaugural launch, titled “Getting Screeched In,” will feature NordSpace’s Taiga rocket, powered by a 3D-printed engine. This mission name is inspired by a Newfoundland tradition of welcoming newcomers, symbolizing Canda’s entry into the commercial space launch sector. Following this suborbital debut, the company will turn its attention to developing its Tundra orbital launch vehicle, which is still in progress. Concurrently, NordSpace is also working on developing its first satellite, Terra Nova, which is scheduled for launch in 2026.
Located at 46° north latitude, ASX has a strategic advantage among North American spaceports, offering the widest range of inclinations on the continent.
With its first launch expected this September, the privately funded company eagerly awaits the moment it will make history by launching a commercial rocket from Canadian soil.
