YPlasma Is Hoping to Make the Future Cooler, Quieter and More Efficient

YPlasma Actuators Technologies S.L. (“YPlasma”), a Madrid-based startup, specializes in developing advanced plasma actuators used for de-icing, cooling, electrostimulation and more. YPlasma recently raised $2.5 million in seed funding led by investors Faber VC and SOSV. As part of the agreement, YPlasma will move its research and development from Madrid to SOSV’s Hax lab space in Newark, New Jersey.


YPlasma, a spin-off from Spain’s National Institute of Aerospace Technology, is developing a breakthrough in electronics cooling with efficient, compact plasma actuators designed for low energy consumption and seamless integration into tight spaces. YPlasma CEO David Garcia notes that the product is cheap to manufacture, very thin and consumes little energy, making the technology effective in compact, energy-sensitive devices such as laptops, smartphones or wearables. For example, a YPlasma actuator can achieve similar performance to a laptop fan using one watt versus three or four watts.


In the future, YPlasma aims to expand into applications for aerodynamics such as improving the efficiency of wind turbines and reducing aviation fuel consumption. The company expects its first commercial deployment in consumer electronics by late 2025.
